Once there was a woman who couldn’t breathe….
She was a wife and a mother to two small children and life was challenging.
Her four year old son had been diagnosed with a permanent disability and she felt tired and sad. She told her husband she needed to go away for a bit because she needed room to breathe. She packed some clothes and snacks, along with some podcasts that made her feel hopeful and checked herself into a hotel in the city.
After the first night alone she felt better so the next day she went out.
She went to the art gallery and bought take-out from the food truck parked outside the hotel. At a bookstore a slim volume on native American poetry caught her eye. ‘Buy it’ her soul seemed to whisper. She opened it up and saw beautiful black and white photos alongside the poems. She bought the book. She went back to the hotel and read those poems and listened to more podcasts.
The magic of life returned.
The woman (who now could breathe again) returned home, happy to see her family. She felt stronger, like she could handle whatever life sent her way.
She decided to leave her job so she could stay home with her young boys. She trained to become a life coach with Dr. Martha Beck, the same woman she had listened to on those podcasts during her hotel stay. Soon after she started her own business.
Two years on from the time she picked up that book on Native American poetry she found herself under the hot high desert sun, co-leading a life and horse coaching retreat from a ranch that sat on traditional Apache Indian land. At that retreat every woman in attendance received a copy of a poem from the book that her soul had nudged her to buy two years before, on a rainy day, at that downtown bookstore.
From feeling bad to feeling good…
As I am sure you have guessed, that woman was me.
On more than one occasion I have wandered off the path, gotten lost and have ended up feeling bad. That is how I know that listening to your authentic self works. Every day I try to ensure that those messages from my soul are not drowned out by the noise of life.
How to hear your inner voice
You separate yourself from your tribe (just for a bit) and you get still and quiet. If you need more support you can turn to a wise book, enlightening podcasts or a life coach or counsellor to assist you.
How are you feeling today?
Do you feel good or bad?
If you are feeling bad it is a sign you are off track (and fyi we all get off track at some point in our life).
Want to feel good?
Then start looking for the signposts that will lead you to the right track, you know the ones that point you in the direction of peace and joy.
Maybe its foggy and you can’t see any signposts?
No worries! You can still find your way. When was the last time you felt good? Go back to that place, that time and space of feeling good and create more of that type of experience.
If you start feeling good you know you are back on track.
Remember your soul is sending you directions all the time but the real question is;
‘Are you listening?’
If you feel you have gotten off track and are having difficulty finding your way I have two options that might interest you.
