A few years ago I co-led an equus coaching retreat (life coaching with horses) with my pal and co-facilitator, TJ, (who did the horse part) at her ranch down in Arizona.
That was a magical experience in ways too numerous to count.
Magnificent horses, the alchemy of coaching, and the beauty of the landscape, all made for a stellar trip, but one other activity we did also stands out.
At one point during our stay, we gathered together and we were shown how to do some traditional weaving by a lovely woman who worked at the ranch.
As I recall, we all sat on the floor in a circle, and got down to work, weaving our own tiny baskets with coloured pipecleaners.
It was so fun!
Some worked fast (I was pokey), some had perfect little baskets, (mine was lop sided), some were green, others were red, some were squat, others were slim.
It was great!
I recall quite a few of the women saying how good it felt to sit in a group, making something with their hands. No agenda, no place to be, no deadline – just enjoying creating, while spending time with each other.
For me that coaching trip was special in SO many ways.
Crying in the desert…
And at the end of it, when again we sat in a circle for the closing ceremony, let’s just say that our lovely participants weren’t the only ones crying in the desert.
That retreat was an emotional and powerful experience on so many levels.
A lost art?
How often do we get to do that?
To sit with other women, enjoying each other’s company and simply CREATE.
My Mom, a homemaker, has been for years, meeting twice a week with two different quilting groups, where they sit, chat, eat, drink tea and coffee, support each other in good times and bad, all while creating amazing quilts.
These two groups mean a lot to my Mom, she prioritizes these quilting meet ups and only ever misses if she is sick, or away.
I believe that in this day and age, true connection, time and space to reflect and dream, and time to CREATE is missing in many peoples lives.
Now groups like my Mom’s quilting circle seem almost quaint and from another time, like basket weaving.
That’s sad isn’t it?
But it doesn’t have to be.
We can find all sorts of ways to bring this type of connection and creativity back.
Pottery groups, writing / reading circles, open air painting, knitting clubs, musician jam sessions, salsa or hip hop dance nights, flower arranging, furniture decorating …
… These groups are out there, but often we are so busy with work and life that we don’t prioritize joyful experiences over daily responsibilities.
And if you can’t find a group that is doing what YOU want to do, well, get to it sister! Go ahead and create what you crave, because the world wants what YOU have to offer!
